The March meeting will feature Mande Miskewycz from the Indiana Small Business Development Center, with a discussion on all things Google for business. The City of Bloomington Common Council's Jack Hopkins Social Services Committee invites social services agencies serving the needs of City of Bloomington residents to apply for 2024 grant funding. This year, the Committee has $350,000 to distribute. Applications are available at the Committee’s webpage https://bloomington.in.gov/council/jack-hopkins. Applications are due by Monday, 1 April 2024 no later than 4:00 pm.
Named in honor of former Council member Jack Hopkins who helped establish the program in 1993, the program is dedicated to funding projects that improve the lives of the City’s most vulnerable residents. Vulnerable residents include those who are low-to-moderate income, under 18 years of age, elderly, people with a disability, or otherwise disadvantaged. Since the program’s inception, the City has allocated over $6 million to local social service agencies. The Committee is composed of four members of the Bloomington Common Council and three City residents with experience in social services. Council members serving are: Isak Nti Asare (Chair), Hopi Stosberg, and Andy Ruff (with one seat yet to be filled). To commemorate Bloomington's status as Indiana's first Tree City USA, the city's 40th anniversary of being named a Tree City USA, and in recognition of Arbor Day, Parks and Recreation is hosting a poster contest for community members to showcase the profound impact trees have had on the city over the years. The theme of the poster contest is "A Legacy of Leaves: 40 Years of Putting Down Roots." Mayor Thomson To Hold Traveling Town Halls: Open and accessible government comes to the people3/4/2024 Mayor Kerry Thomson is committed to an open government that is accessible to all Bloomington residents. In that spirit, she will be out in the community conducting a series of traveling town hall meetings. Every other month, a listening session will be held in each of the six City Council districts, starting in District 1, represented by Councilmember Isabel Piedmont-Smith. In the intervening months, Mayor Thomson will hold a town hall on a specific topical issue.
The first listening session will take place on Monday, March 18, 6-7:30pm at Summit Elementary School, 1450 W Countryside Ln. Mayor Thomson will be accompanied by Councilmembers as well as Planning and Transportation and Housing and Neighborhood Development department directors. What questions or concerns do you have? What issues are important to you? How can the City better serve the community? Please attend the town hall in your district, or another one that fits your schedule, for an opportunity to engage directly with City officials. ![]() Traffic separation barriers will be installed along certain portions of the existing buffer between the bicycle lane and the motor vehicle travel lanes on E 3rd St between Indiana Ave and Eagleson Ave. This improvement uses two types of low-cost barrier curbs with delineator posts. Feedback from community stakeholders played a crucial role in shaping the proposed project, including a positive reception from the City’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Commission and coordination with stakeholders such as Bloomington Transit and Indiana University. This improvement may be refined or modified to best suit the transportation needs of the corridor in the future. The Bloomington Urban Enterprise Association (BUEA) proudly announces an array of grant and scholarship programs designed to uplift businesses and residents within the Enterprise Zone, with a renewed emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. These programs are tailored to support the community encompassing the area north, west, and south of Downtown.
Three prominent grant initiatives, coupled with three scholarship programs, are now accessible and are aimed at fortifying safety, security, accessibility, and DEI efforts within the community. The Small Business Safety & Security Grant earmarks $25,000 annually to bolster safety and security measures within Zone businesses, while the Business Building Improvement Grant allocates an equivalent budget to enhance physical infrastructure and promote economic vitality. Further, the Accessibility Modification Grant dedicates $25,000 annually to facilitate ADA compliance, ensuring inclusivity for all patrons. ![]() The City of Bloomington honors and celebrates its outstanding women during Women's History Month by recognizing recipients of the Women’s Achievement Awards.
